Abstract
Recent interest in software-defined radios and the upcoming UWB WiMedia standard have triggered research in wide band RF design in deep submicron CMOS. At first, it focused on how to achieve low NF and high linearity over the wide RF bandwidth; today its focus has shifted to the interference issue. At the same time, modern CMOS processes have proven to be capable of covering the demands of wireless communication standards for RF PAs with moderate output power levels up to 20-24 dBm. The 1 W output power level is now seen as a holy grail for the design of CMOS RF PAs for cellular applications. The following remarks address both topics and report results that have been obtained in academia and industry.
