W. David Sincoskie, pioneer of packet communications [Society News]

The IEEE Communications Society notes with deep regret the death of our respected colleague, W. David Sincoskie, who passed away on October 20, 2010 at age 55. An IEEE Fellow and a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Dave was a major contributor to computer communications, and in particular to packet transmission of data, voice and video media in local area networks and the Internet. He worked for many years at Bell Labs and Bellcore (later Telcordia) before becoming, in 2008, a full Professor and founding Director of the Center for Information and Communications Sciences at the University of Delaware. He was inducted into the University of Delaware´s Alumni Wall of Fame in 2006.
