Magnet power supply for the 7 GeV proton synchrotron Nimrod. Part 3: Mercury-arc convertors

The paper discusses some of the main problems concerning the mercury-arc convertors feeding the guide magnet of the 7 GeV proton synchrotron. The duties of the convertor are discussed, with particular emphasis on the problems arising out of the inter-phase transformer cascade. The main elements of the control system are discussed; the grid control sets are considered separately as they represent a major portion of the control system. Finally, the various protective devices provided for the convertor installation are described.
