Abstract
For some applications, the transistorised circuits generally used for firing thyristors are not necessarily the most suitable. In power applications of thyristors, for example, firing pulses synchronised with the mains supply are frequently required, and circuits based on the properties of square-loop magnetic material may offer a number of advantages for such use. This paper describes two simple new techniques for producing pulses by electromagnetic methods to trigger thyristors, and includes a mathematical analysis of their operation. The inherent disadvantage of earlier electromagnetic techniques has been the relatively long rise time of the pulses, but methods of overcoming this trouble are described in the paper.
