Abstract :
The paper is concerned with intermodulation distortion effects when interference occurs between satellite communication systems and trunk radio line-of-sight systems. Curves are presented showing distortion levels (which are proportional to the ratio of unwanted to wanted carrier powers) for various expected modulation conditions and carrier separations. These curves form the basis for recommendations in a companion paper regarding allowable radiated power levels in both the satellite and the line-of-sight systems. It appears that a particularly dangerous situation exists when the satellite system is lightly loaded. Permanent artificial dispersal of the satellite carrier seems necessary, and this is considered in some detail.
