Abstract
The radiation pattern of a linear array can be represented by a polynomial in a single complex variable, and therefore the problem of approximating to the prescribed directional characteristics of a particular aerial can be solved using a potential analogue, in a manner similar to that employed in network synthesis. When the array has a symmetrical amplitude distribution and a uniform progressive phase shift between the excitations of successive elements, the analogue can be constructed using a single sheet of conducting paper of finite size. Experimental results are presented, and it is proposed that the technique should be extended to include asymmetric arrays.
