Embedded databases are in software applications and in hardware devices, both mobile and fixed. They are in familiar tools and in new remote intelligent devices, such as vending machines that monitor their own inventory and place reorders. In fact, without knowing it, you may be using them every day in your network or voice system hardware or in some software application. Traditionally, embedded databases have been the province of device developers and value added resellers rather than IT staff. However, the rapid increase in the number of telecommuters, the explosive growth of e-business, and the general migration to wireless technologies have put embedded database deployment on the IT short list.
