Abstract
The disadvantage of progressive transmission, compared to transmission in a single step, is analyzed for the high-rate case using a polytope that is self-similar under binary subdivision. This disadvantage is calculated to be 0.3424 dB or 0.057 bit compared to scalar quantization, obtained with a step size of 1 bit per ensemble
