Stability and control of distributed-parameter systems

A system described by a set of partial differential equations is considered, and control laws are generated so that a quadratic performance index takes on smaller values for the controlled system than the uncontrolled system. The controls are suboptimal, and are obtained from a linear system of partial differential equations. Both domain and boundary controls are considered, and the asymptotic stability of the controlled system is examined. The methods are applied to examples in which explicit results are obtained and comparisons made with the optimal controls.
