Abstract
Universities offer a unique environment with opportunities to reflect upon the cultural location and practice of engineering. Talking about engineering, trying out new ways of talking and exploring ethical issues alongside technical questions all offer ways of thinking about engineering which are culturally as well as technically valuable. The opportunity to engage critically with the roles of engineering and the engineer in society is lost if engineering education is little more than technical training
