Abstract :
Just before November´s Supercomputing ´98 in Orlando, Florida, both Silicon Graphics and IBM claimed to have produced the world´s fastest supercomputers. At the same time, Compaq announced a world record for sorting one terabyte of data on its latest supercomputer. And just four months earlier, Japan´s NEC announced it had the world´s fastest supercomputer.
