The precautionary principle and its practice [environmental law]

The law relating to the regulation and safety of nuclear facilities has been a model for the development of the general environmental law. One of the pillars of sustainable development as set down in principle 15 of the Rio Declaration embodies the precautionary approach, which gives rise to the precautionary principle. This article identifies the basis of the precautionary principle and the law implementing the principle in the European Union.
