Abstract
The electric-field system within a circular aperture in an earthed plate through which a high-voltage conductor passes is examined, using oblate-spheroidal co-ordinates. Electrolytic-tank studies give utilisation factors which agree with those calculated to within ±5%. Sparking voltages are calculated using a general discharge law, and these agree with measured values to within ±6%.
