Abstract
The scattering from an arbitrarily shaped cylinder is characterised by its induced field ratio (IFR) and its scattering pattern. The paper describes how a focused beam system is used to determine the scattering characteristics of an arbitrarily shaped cylinder. The fields of the transmitting and receiving antennas are described by equivalent fundamental Gaussian beams. An analytical procedure based on the computation of the coupling between the Gaussian beams in the focused beam system and the scattered field is used to determine the IFR and the scattering pattern of the cylinder. The results obtained by this method verify well with the scattering characteristics computed analytically or numerically by the method of moments or finite element method
