Abstract :
A cell discarding mechanism with dynamic priority assignment is proposed and analysed. Cell streams of each connection are monitored periodically. The priority of each connection is adjusted dynamically according to its past behaviour. When congestion occurs, cells from low-priority connections shall be rejected. The rejection is done through a gating device for each connection. Using this approach, the connections which cause congestion will be enforced first and fairness is guaranteed. With this design, the quality of service of a well-behaved connection is protected and the link utilisation is improved simultaneously
