Abstract
The introduction of p.c.m. transmission systems is making possible the use of t.d.m. exchanges which switch channels in the digital form. These exchanges need both to switch and to introduce delay in order to give access to all outgoing channels. Space equivalents of the t.d.m. exchanges are developed, and formulas for congestion for the channel-changing units within the exchange are derived. Further work is required before a complete exchange can be analysed.
