Abstract :
The possibility of developing failure diagnostics and remedial operating strategies, which together will make possible adaptive fault-tolerant operation, is investigated for a brushless DC motor drive with a fan load. Correlations between the predictions of a simulation program and test measurements are shown that provide confidence that the development of fault-tolerant drives can be undertaken with this tool. Methods by which a certain performance level can be reattained by a motor winding and an inverter transistor following some simple faults are examined
