Abstract :
The overvoltages produced by the energisation of overhead lines from pure inductive sources depend on the source inductance and the length of line being energised. The effects of these two factors are investigated using a transient network analyser (t.n.a.) both on a single-phase and a 3-phase basis. In the case of the latter, non-simultaneous closure of the three phases causes larger overvoltages than are produced in the case of simultaneous closure. This increase in overvoltage may be expressed in the form of contours. The possibility then exists of applying these contours more generally to transmission lines having parameters which differ from those of the line considered in the investigation.
