Abstract
The principle of operation, method of construction and general characteristics of the eddy-current coupling are reviewed. The influence of efficiency on the comparative running costs of a coupling drive is considered, and it is indicated that costs can compare well with competitive systems. Coupling drives are shown to be applicable to a wide range of control variables. It is shown that the low control power makes the coupling ideally suitable for multimachine systems, examples of which are described.
