Abstract
An algorithm is described which attempts to minimise the cost of a greenfield electricity-supply network while always maintaining security. An initial fully-secure network is set up in which all the load substations are linked only to supply substations. This is successively changed, at each stage making the greatest possible one-stage cost reduction subject to maintaining security. This is continued until no further changes can be made. The algorithm has been applied to some examples. Extensions to the nongreenfield situation and time-expanding problems are discussed.
