Abstract :
A 660 nm resonant cavity light emitting diode was used to transmit an optical signal through a 30 m long plastic optical fibre. To simulate a low-cost optical transmission system, the light was coupled directly from the device into the fibre and an Si-diode without additional amplification was used for detection. A 27-1 pseudo-random bit stream was transmitted at a data rate of 250 Mbit/s achieving a bit error rate of 3×10-10
