Abstract
A 3-phase electric-traction system for railway vehicles is described. The traction motor is an inside-out induction machine, built within a tubular axle, driving the wheels directly without gearing. The concept offers potential savings in manufacturing and maintenance costs. Good agreement has been obtained between predictions and measured performance on a series of experimental motors, and production versions are now being designed.
