Abstract :
Synthetic techniques are widely used in the testing of circuit breakers. The paper reviews the present state of synthetic testing with regard to the theoretical point of view, to standardisation, and to practical application. Models are described that help to explain interrupting processes, and to determine quantitative limits for synthetic circuits. The extent of world wide application of synthetic test methods is indicated, and the position regarding the formal introduction of synthetic testing into IEC recommendations is stated.
