Abstract
The impact of the North American DS-1 extended superframe format (ESF) on both service and application performance monitoring is discussed. The difference between D4 framing and the ESF format is explained, and a description is given of how customers use ESF statistics. Results of ESF monitoring by the authors are presented, and ESF facility measurements are correlated with data application performance. Network sectionalization is explained, and performance issues raised by ESF are described.<>
