Abstract
Electrical utilities constitute both an essential service and a very large business sector, with annual billings in excess of £11 billion in the UK alone. The article reviews the computers applications that are being installed to operate the vast geographically spread networks in a safe and efficient manner. Network operations seem to be an ideal candidate for an integrated information system, and indeed the Electricity Supply Industry is now beginning to implement such systems. This did not occur earlier due to technology shortcomings and organisational lines of demarcation
