Abstract :
Education sector is the 2nd largest sector globally and the Indian school system are the world´s largest school system with more than 1.12 million schools. There are more than 100 million college students worldwide, new campuses are being built, and existing campuses are expanding. Educational Data Mining refers to the use of data mining in education. This can prove to be very helpful in order to understand and track learning patterns and learning experiences of students which in turn will help in the development of better courses which are suited to their needs. In this paper, we explore in detail the different phases of e-learning development from an organizational perspective and also explore the various phases where data mining can be used. The possibility of applying educational data mining of the data available from Learning Management Systems (LMS) with the help of SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) standard is also explored. SCORM is a widely used e-learning standard supported by more than 90% of the LMS vendors in the market. The shortfalls of SCORM and the next generation LMS technology is also discussed in this paper.
