Abstract
Sodium borosilicate glasses have been prepared from high-purity materials, with absorption losses between 5 and 6 dB/km. Continuous production of fibre from these glasses using the double-crucible technique has given fibre with losses as low as 10.5 dB/km at 800 nm. The loss mechanisms in the fibre have been investigated and the reproducibility of the process studied.
