    A compact 1.5 μm Er/Yb-doped double cladding fibre amplifier, diode side-pumped through an embedded v-groove, is demonstrated. A small signal gain of 47 dB, an output power of 312 mW and, separately, a noise figure of 4.5 dB are measured
