Abstract :
Measurements of an arc in a narrow slot surrounded by insulating walls show that, if the arc velocity is subsonic and the walls of the slot do not generate gas, the current density is independent of the arc velocity. A formula for the mean current density facilitates calculation of thermal conditions in magnetic-blow-out-chamber switches.
