Abstract
The mechanism of electromagnetic damping in stepping motors is investigated, and it is shown that the damping depends on three parameters of the motor/drive circuit. The observed differences in damping between the widely used single-phase and 2-phase excitation schemes are shown to arise from the different equilibrium conditions, and the much greater damping with 2-phase operation is fully explained. Simple formulas for the prediction and optimisation of damping are developed, and these are directly applicable to all types of permanent-magnet and variable-reluctance stepping motors.
