Abstract
Mobile networks are experiencing huge growth of data traffic from various smart terminals. Video streaming is one of the most important traffic types from traffic volume perspective. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology is often used to deliver streaming service, especially in China. In this paper, we propose a methodology and set up an experimental system to understand the characteristics of P2P based streaming (PPlive) traffic in mobile network environment. Extensive experiments on typical PPlive services on several types of terminals are conducted in a test 3G mobile network, and typical traffic characteristics of PPlive traffic over a mobile network are identified and illustrated. Finally, Potential issues resulted from mobile PPlive traffic characteristics to mobile networks and terminals are discussed.
