Abstract :
The Iridium satellite communications system has had a chequered history. Conceived when it was still unclear whether cellular telephony would take off, by the time its constellation of low-earthorbiting satellites was in place, the popularity of mobile phones was growing and Iridium´s potential market was shrinking.
