Abstract
We develop a new three dimensional (3D) heat transfer slider model and study the thermal dependence of the MR signal on different slider flying states. Although it is generally believed that the thermal effect on the MR signal results mainly from a change in the flying height of the head, and that the MR temperature increases with increasing flying height, this is not always the case. We find that for some types of air bearing design, when the flying height is very small the MR temperature first decreases with increasing flying height and then increases with increasing flying height. New experimental results reported here are consistent with simulations incorporating the heat transfer model
