Abstract
Erosion by partial discharge and the layer effect on breakdown characteristics of polymeric films immersed in cryogenic fluids are examined. Meshlike patterns were observed on the polymeric film eroded by partial discharges in liquid helium, which may lead to poor life characteristics. The layer effect depends on the waveform and the magnitude of the applied voltage. This phenomenon is discussed in terms of the discharge characteristics of cryogenic liquid between film layers.
