Abstract :
The continual flying height decrease imposed by the rapid areal density growth in recording, together with slider miniaturization and the reduction of the actuator arm-length are significant challenges for air bearing surface (ABS) design. Flying performance of ABS designs with trailing shallow steps are presented. Padded/textured and dynamic load/unload designs for further fly height reduction are also examined. Some fabrication requirements are also considered
