Abstract
The author discusses the benefits of “modern” Fortran, that is, Fortran after the Fortran 90 standard. He argues that modern Fortran is better than pre-90 Fortran in several ways. Nowhere is that more dramatic than in the handling of space. The author explains how the new facilities improve upon the old, by taking a kind of “space odyssey”. This journey from the Beginning to Modern Times will illustrate how Fortran has evolved and suggest how to best use the new facilities. Perhaps, if you have not done so already, it will motivate you to begin using modern Fortran
