Abstract :
An attempt has been made in this paper to trace the development of the conventional generating plant put in operation in lower West Bengal in 1947 and thereafter raising the total installed capacity to about 1500 MW in 1966. The total available capacity is far less due to a variety of reasons viz. limitations of boiler capacity and other causes leading to frequent load-shedding currently adopted in the city and the neighbourhood about which public opinion is so overwhelming. To meet the present condition which is likely to remain for some years, already generating sets approaching absolescence have to deal to greater extent with base loads which would normally be used only in emergency.
