Automatic load despatching

The paper reviews the functions and the operation of an automatic load despatching system. The control system uses a digital computer, which allocates loads to individual generators for various times in the future, and transmits instructions to the power stations, where they are automatically implemented by special machine controllers. The aspects of control to be considered in such a system are load prediction, power system security, frequency control and operating economics. The functions of short duration and long duration targets, the distinctive features of automatic and manual control and the duties of the control-engineer are also discussed.
