Abstract :
It is pointed out that high-definition television (HDTV) offers an opportunity to improve color rendition. It is suggested that there are three ways in which the colorimetry of future television systems can be improved. The first is to define the color characteristics of the system completely, making it possible to define quality transcoding into other systems, and correct for all possible displays. A second improvement is to extend the color gamut to take advantage of future display improvements and to fully exploit the color capability of feature films. A third improvement is to include constant luminance operation. The advantages of and problems involved in achieving these improvements are discussed
