Abstract
We explain how to use color under the constraints of a window system for three types of applications, discussing each topic in parallel for the X Window System and Microsoft Windows. The focus is on displaying images with special attention to color fidelity, discussing techniques for keeping a consistent appearance between applications, and device portability issues
