Abstract
Until recently the characteristics of image converters have confined their use almost entirely to the conversion of infra-red to visible radiation. The idea of using such a tube as an optical shutter is not new, but the application has awaited the development of a suitable tube. The paper compares the performance of various types of image converters and discusses in detail the characteristics of a new type of tube with special emphasis on its use for high-speed photography.
