Abstract
In such new distribution grid structures, protection schemes employed in mature grid have started to change caused by the unpredictable nature of renewable generation units. Thus, the protection devices and relevant control methodologies should dynamically be adapted to changing power flow and fault conditions within the grid system. The protection issue in smart distribution grids with additional DG units is a complex problem that should be considered and analyzed carefully for promoting the reliability and security of power supply. In this paper, a study on the protection recommendations and analysis of the various fault scenarios for DG based distribution systems will be realized. The IEEE 13 bus test system will be utilized in the mentioned study. Different case studies including the possibilities of multiple DGs in several locations within the grid structure will be evaluated under fault conditions. The short circuit analysis and suggestions for improving protection performance are included. The relevant modeling actions and simulations are implemented in Matlab/Simulink.
