Abstract
A self-contained canonical solution is obtained for the currents excited on an overhead cable by a vertical line of current of finite height. Particular attention is paid to the quasistatic limit where a transmission line description of the source-to-cable coupling emerges. The case where the cable is a coaxial structure is also treated in an explicit fashion
