Silicon photo-voltaic cells for instrumentation and control applications

The paper describes the operation of silicon p-n junction photo-voltaic cells as detectors of visible and near infra-red illumination. A brief account is given of the detection mechanism with references to earlier papers, and the processes used in the fabrication of this type of cell are described. Several applications of silicon photocells which make use of their particular advantages are considered.
