Abstract :
This review of the present situation in the optical maser field discusses the principle of the maser and its extension to the infra-red and visible region of the spectrum. Various types of optical maser which have been successfully operated are described. The unique features of high spectral purity and narrow beamwidth are pointed out, and some present and future applications are discussed.
