Abstract :
Methods for using standard microcomputers for operation by physically disabled persons are mentioned and the development of suitable computer programs for control from their limited input devices is explained. The need, in the present case, to limit the program development to the severely physically handicapped who are only able to control one, or possibly two, contact operations is also discussed. The method of linking the user input devices into the computer through an interface unit, either directly or remotely from a wheelchair, is then described. Examples of application programs for initial assessment are given, followed by more detailed explanation of communication programs. These involve the use of user adaptive procedures which enable individual users to adapt a general program to their own specific needs.
