Abstract
In the framework of the EU participation to JT-60SA project, a "pseudo-3D" thermo hydraulic tool was developed in order to address reliably the choice between multiple design options on the TF coils design. The tool based on the ANSYS code was configured to calculate the conductor helium temperature variation with time taking into account the transport of helium in the case and the winding pack. The central criterion used is the conductor temperature margin. The principal loads studied are the nuclear heating, and the eddy current losses in the TF case. A 3D model of the machine with the vacuum vessel, the TF case, and the magnets was built to calculate the eddy currents during a disruption, and the results are used as input in the pseudo 3D thermo hydraulic tool. In the framework of cost and feasibility optimization, this study has permitted to comparatively evaluate pros and cons of TF design options concerning geometry, casing cooling channels and winding pack insulation. Moreover a consolidated basis for definitive choices towards an optimized TF design with respect to feasibility, cost and risks has been proposed.
