Abstract
Data transmission over the UK TACS cellular radio system and the considerations leading to the definition of the CDLC standard are discussed. Forward error correction (FEC) and automatic requests for repeat (ARQ) are used to overcome errors due to fading, interference, shadowing, `handoff¿ and `blank and burst¿ signalling. Interleaving is used to randomize error bursts, and the data is divided into message blocks which are independently synchronized. A V26 bis modem is used, and the link procedures are based on the HDLC standard with a selective reject facility. The paper presents the results of simulations and field trials of the system.
