Abstract :
An attractive force between magnetic poles was utilised to produce significant wavelength shifts in fibre Bragg gratings. Programmable magnets were used to controllably strain and shift the wavelength of the grating by more than 15 nm. The wavelength tuning is fast and the device requires no power to maintain the shifted wavelengths
