Abstract :
A new method for compacting speech in the time domain is proposed. Unlike conventional time scale modification techniques, the method emphasises event locations, obtained from spectral analysis and hierarchical temporal decomposition, and removes the remaining parts of the signal adaptively. Subjective evaluation tests show that the new method outperforms conventional compaction methods from the viewpoints of quality and comprehensibility of the compacted signal
